Hybrid approach to high-frequency microfluidic mixing.

We report the experimental verification of the predicted chaotic mixing characteristics for a polydimethylsioxane microfluidic chip, based on the mechanism of multistage cross-channel flows. While chaotic mixing can be achieved within short passage distances, there is an optimal side channel flow pulsation frequency beyond which the mixing becomes ineffective. Based on the physical understandin...

Optimal frequency for microfluidic mixing across a fluid interface.

A new analytical tool for determining the optimum frequency for a micromixing strategy to mix two fluids across their interface is presented. The frequency dependence of the flux is characterized in terms of a Fourier transform related to the apparatus geometry. Illustrative microfluidic mixing examples based on electromagnetic forcing and fluid pumping strategies are presented.

Mixing representation levels: The hybrid approach to automatic text generation

Natural language generation systems (NLG) map non-linguistic representations into strings of words through a number of steps using intermediate representations of various levels of abstraction. Template based systems, by contrast, tend to use only one representation level, i.e. fixed strings, which are combined, possibly in a sophisticated way, to generate the

Microfluidic Mixing CNF Project

Microfluidic systems present advantages and challenges relative to larger systems for performing chemical processes. They facilitate manipulation and analysis of small sample volumes and process parallelization within a small footprint. However, they generally suffer from inefficient mixing and low rates of interfacial mass transfer, due to the laminar flow and the long diffusive mixing times c...

Rapid microfluidic mixing.

A preformed T-microchannel imprinted in polycarbonate was postmodified with a pulsed UV excimer laser (KrF, 248 nm) to create a series of slanted wells at the junction. The presence of the wells leads to a high degree of lateral transport within the channel and rapid mixing of two confluent streams undergoing electroosmotic flow. Several mixer designs were fabricated and investigated. All desig...
